Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as a little girl. The aunt she had was a nurse, who was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the art form could be utilized to promote activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer and was motivated to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990 she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a student. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. In the course of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999.
